Preparing to submit your Foundation School preferences for UKFP 2027? Here is what you need to know about the current allocation landscape.
The PIA System Remains
For FP2027, the UK Foundation Programme continues to use Preference Informed Allocation (PIA). This means your allocation is determined by your preferences and a computer-generated rank. Educational achievements (EPM) and SJT scores are no longer used for allocation.
If you aren't familiar with how the algorithm works, make sure you understand the two-pass allocation system before submitting your list.
Rank Release Timing
A crucial factor for FP2027 is that you will not know your computer-generated rank when you submit your preferences. According to official UKFPO guidance, ranks will only be released after the recruitment process ends, and only to applicants who are still in the allocation pool at that time.
This reinforces the core strategy: you must rank your schools in your genuine order of preference. You cannot build a list tailored to your rank because you will not know it.
Assessing the Landscape
Before you finalise your list, review the official historical demand from recent years. While historical data is not a prediction, it provides essential context about which regions are consistently oversubscribed.
Testing Your Options
Because the algorithm is complex, human intuition is often a poor judge of how a preference list will perform. We recommend building a few different preference scenarios and testing them against historical data.
